Week 8 Recreation Review

It's been a great season.  Thank so much to Nancy for the tireless work she does in the office, to the organization of the field marshals and game days from Ed, to Ralph, Al and Tom for the mentoring and organizing of referees, to Michael for the scheduling and rescheduling, to all of you for continuing to volunteer to coach and to all the parent volunteers.  It is truly a team effort to make it a success.

Each year we get various inquiries about the program.  I will address a few of them.
1.  Can we balance the teams out at the higher levels with a draft or evaluation day?  We have visited this issue in the past and the overwhelming majority wanted neighborhood/school teams as much as possible regardless of being a weaker team or not.  Drafts and evaluations do not always come out balanced either as has been seen in the basketball and football programs.  When we mix teams, then we hear complaints about how far people have to travel for practice for Rec league, issues with coaches, etc.  Overall, the way it is set up has served us well for many years.
2.  Can Rec teams have a training session at the complex?  There are too many teams, not enough space.  GLSA does not own the fields.  They are owned and managed by LTSC and they have their own board so this is not an option for us.  Travel teams pay significantly more and do train at the complex so there truly is limited space.
3.  Can GLSA line the fields at the parks?  The fields are owned and managed by Libertyville Parks and Rec.  They are used for baseball, football, and other activities so they will not line them.
4.  We can't we warm up in front of the goal?  This is an LTSC policy that GLSA has to follow as a tenant.  LTSC is ordering more signs for the goals that say not to warm up in the box so it will be easier to manage.  We will continue to remind all of our leagues and opponents of the rule but don't expect complete compliance as it is impossible to monitor all fields all the time.  They just want to keep it to a minimum to keep the goal area in good playing condition.
5.  What can we do to help the first graders adjust to the larger field with all the lines?  We are looking into offering an orientation before the season starts out at the complex for all the players and coaches at the first grade level to become familiar with the field and goalkeeper rules.

First and second grade parents interested in the Rec Plus should go to the website under the Recreational tab for all the specific information on the program and registration details.  Let me know if you have any questions. http://www.glsa.org/Default.aspx?tabid=193926   If you have any other questions or suggestions on how to improve the league, please let me know.

Thanks again for all you do and have an enjoyable holiday season.  We look forward to getting back out in April!

 Blessings, Jeff
